Obituary for Earline Carter Etheredge

Earline Carter Etheredge, 78, of Gallion, Ala., departed this life for her eternal home on Sept. 1, 2022.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, at The Cedars of Demopolis, located at 21765 US Highway 80 in Demopolis, Ala. The family will receive friends from 2 pm to 3 pm with the service beginning at 3 pm and Pastor Randall Smith officiating.

She will be laid to rest next to her son, Stewart, at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery located on Coretta Scott King Memorial Highway (County Road 29), Marion, Ala. GPS coordinates for the church are 32.733918, -87.357203.

She was born in Marion, Ala., on Aug. 30, 1944, to George Edd and Birddie Swindle Carter and attended Francis Marion High School, graduating with the class of 1962.

She moved to Gallion in 1977, where she raised two daughters and operated a daycare at her home throughout the 1980s. It was there that many Demopolis children became “Miss Earline’s” children. But perhaps her greatest joy in life were her grandsons, who she constantly kept up with and had to know their goings-on. She would tell anyone who would listen how proud she was of them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Edd and Birddie Swindle Carter; siblings J.C. Carter, Clyde Carter, Edd Carter, Jr., Wilson Carter, Inez Carter Morris, Louise Carter Cash, Ruby Carter Goraum, Wordner Carter, and Odis Lee Carter; a son Ronald Stewart Etheredge, and a grandson Christopher Gwin.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters Annette Gwin (Bruce) and Loretta Etheredge, a sister Jesse Faye Terry (Paul), grandsons Stewart Gwin (Molly), Nathan Gwin (Destiny), Andrew Gwin (Danica), Benjamin Gwin, and a great-grandson Jackson Briggs Gwin, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by a special friend, Dorothy Bourcq, who made sure her hair appointments were never missed and her nails were always painted over the last few years.

Pallbearers will be Stewart Gwin, Nathan Gwin, Andrew Gwin, and Benjamin Gwin. Honorary Pallbearers are Jamie Flowers, RN, and Laura Etheridge, RN, and her many friends from SALT of Demopolis, who brought her so much joy in her later years.

In lieu of flowers, she has requested donations be made to SALT of Demopolis or Bigbee Human Society in her memory. The address for each is included below.
