Obituary for George William Parnell

George William Parnell age 77 of Grove Hill, AL died March 15, 2021 at Mobile Infirmary. He was born July 28, 1943 in Pine Hill, AL to James D. and Alice Viola Parnell.

He attended Clarke County High School and was a member of Grove Hill United Methodist Church. He loved crossword puzzles, loved painting, his church, and the church membership. He loved riding his bicycle and could be seen on it around town.

The Grove Hill United Methodist Church was a big part of his life from training and supervising youths who were acolytes for morning worship, folding and distributing bulletins on Sunday mornings, being a part of the youth Sunday School classes, helping with Vacation Bible School, enjoying Sunday night suppers and other events and always sitting on the first row for services. The church and its members were his heart.

Several former pastors had kind memories of George they shared on Facebook when they learned of his passing.

Rev. Dave Rhodes remembers how much he loved bus trips and going on the annual Blue Lake Retreat. He remembered one trip to the water park with the church youth and George and although George was nearly 30 years older, he ran circles around the preacher, sliding and tubing and having great fun!

Survivors include two brothers, Robert Lee Parnell of Columbus, GA and James A. Parnell of Grove Hill, AL.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Florence Marie Parnell of Richmond, TX

A graveside funeral services will be Friday, March 19 at 2:00 pm at Pine Hill Cemetery with Rev. Kathy McKinley, pastor of Grove Hill United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements by O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home.
