Luther Ree Cassity “Grandmother” Averitt formerly of Selma went to heaven on Friday January 22nd, 2021 at her home in Tuscaloosa, AL. The daughter of Emma (Knight) and Lucious Morgan Cassity, Ree was born on April 6th, 1940 in Thomasville, AL. She graduated Thomasville High School in Thomasville, AL. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Selma. She enjoyed her final years in a retirement community in Tuscaloosa, Alabama near her daughter. One of her greatest accomplishments in life was to be called “Grandmother” by many more than just her grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to enjoy life in her final years.

She has one surviving sister - Juanita Cassity Deaton.

She was predeceased by her husband Johnny Floyd Averitt; parents, Lucious Morgan Cassity and Emma Knight Cassity and sister Clara Anne Cassity Lister.

The family would like to say thank you to a Barbara Hall for her unconditional love and caring for her the final months of her journey. Also, we would like to thank Tuscaloosa friends Tim Eads, Glenda Vaughn, Steve Whitaker, Shelia Hall and Vickey Burch for their love and compassion as well as her Selma friends Faye Harris and Susan Smitherman who remained in constant communication with her. We are forever blessed by their friendship.

She will be buried in the Enon Cemetery in Pine Hill, AL. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic her burial will be private. There will be a celebration of her life at a later time.
