Obituary for Aubrey Earl Cannon

1SG (Ret) Aubrey Cannon, born December 15, 1934 in Hugo, AL to Garland and Sarah Cannon, passed away at his Linden home on December 17, 2020. He graduated from Marengo High School in Thomaston, AL and later joined the U.S. Army serving 26 ½ years. He served with 11th Airborne Division, 82nd Airborne Division and 101st Airborne Division. He completed 2 tours in Vietnam, both with the 101st Airborne Division, 501st Signal Battalion and 2/17th CAV (Airborne). His military awards included the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal with 7 awards, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with two service stars, RVN Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal with “60” device, Combat Infantry Badge, Valorous Unit Award and Master Parachutist badge having over 700 career jumps.

Aubrey married Jo Ann Whitcomb on August 2, 1957. They celebrated over 63 years of marriage and raised 5 children together. After military retirement Aubrey moved home to Linden, AL and had a long and successful career in the timber business, retiring from Sumter Timber.

Aubrey was preceded in death by parents, Garland and Sarah Cannon, brothers, Edward and Sammy, sisters, Glenda Cannon and Doll Hill, granddaughter, Anna Kathryn Cannon and grandson, Joshua Cannon.

He is survived by sons, Ken (Sue) Cannon, Rob Cannon, Joe (Norma) Cannon, Jeffrey (Kendra) Cannon and daughter, Pattie (Raymond) Wright. Aubrey is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include Meagan (Matt) West, Patrick (Vanna) Cannon, Heather (Cole) Basinger, Kelsie (Corey) Krantz, Shane Cannon, Leigh Ellen Cannon, Zan (Josie) Cannon, Maggie Cannon, Abbigail Cannon, Emily Cannon and Caroline Cannon. Great-grandchildren are Bryce and Vann West, Ava and Eli Basinger, Rivers Cannon, Kase Cannon, and Houston Krantz. Aubrey is also survived by brother, Walter (Debbie) Cannon, sisters, Gwen (Sidney) Hill and Louise Mock and brothers-in-law, Richard (Carolyn) Hill and Ezell (Irene) Whitcomb.

Visitation will be Monday, December 21st from 12:00 noon until 1:30 pm at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home, Linden, AL with graveside services immediately following at 2:00 pm at Octagon Cemetery.
