Obituary for Marcus I. Walters
Marcus Ivey Walters age 72 of Nanafalia, AL passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, MS. He was born July 25, 1948 in Butler, AL to William Thomas Walters, Sr. and Evelyn Pritchett Walters.
Graveside services will be Thursday, December 17, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Nanafalia Baptist Church Cemetery in Nanafalia, AL with Rev. John Bonner, Rev. Patricia Grindle, and Rev. Craig Gavin officiating. Viewing will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years (March 3, 1968) Judy Slade Walters of Nanafalia, AL; two daughters, Tammy Walters Lewis (Matt) of Sweet Water, AL and Wendy Walters Norton (Terry) of Thomasville, AL; two brothers, Thomas Woodrow Walters (Dianne) of Birmingham, AL and Randy Pritchett Walters, Sr. (Vivian) of Nanafalia, AL; sister-in-law, Charlotte Ross Walters of Nanafalia, AL; five grandchildren, John Matthew Lewis, Jr., Ivey Slade Lewis, Marcus Gray Norton, Thomas Walters Lewis, and Mary Evelyn Norton; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas Walters, Sr. and Evelyn Pritchett Walters; brother, William Thomas “Rusty” Walters, Jr., sister, Mary Jo Walters Pritchett; nephew, Ryan Patrick Walters; and special friend, Bobby McManus.
Pallbearers will be John Matthew Lewis, Jr., Ivey Slade Lewis, Marcus Gray Norton, Thomas Walters Lewis, John Matthew Lewis, Sr., and Terry Lee Norton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Burnham, Eddie Dial, John Doggett, Wayne Dumas, Jerry Huckabee, Shane Jimerson, Buddy Lankford, Norman Allen Lewis, Randy McManus, Stan Stokley, Ronald Tucker, Velpo Waldrope, Randy Walters, Jr., and Paul Whitcomb.
He was a member of the Nanafalia Baptist Church.
During his career, he was principal at Marengo Academy Elementary. He also was an assistant varsity football coach, head JV football coach and head baseball coach for the Longhorns. In August 1974 he became the Title I Director for Marengo County Board of Education. In July 1976 he was named the principal at Sweet Water High School. On September 17, 1979 the Marengo County Board of Education appointed him as the superintendent of the school system. After 21 years, he retired as superintendent of Marengo County Schools. After staying home for five years, Patrician Academy hired him as Headmaster in 2005 and he retired again in 2009. He began working with Burkes Mechanical & Electrical in 2011, and worked there until his time on this precious Earth.
Marcus graduated from Sweet Water High School on May 27, 1966. He then continued his education and graduated from Livingston University on May 29, 1970 with a B.S. in Education. He then got his masters in School Administration / Superintendents and Principals on June 1, 1974. In 1983, he received his EDS from the school of Superintendents and Principals from Livingston University.
