Obituary for Mary LaRoche Megginson

Mary LaRoche Megginson age 94, died May 24, 2019 at Atherton Place in Marietta, GA. She was born March 27, 1925 in Waycross, GA to Juno Smith LaRoche and Frank Isaac LaRoche. She attended Montreat College and Valdosta College, then earned bachelor and master's degrees from The University of West Alabama. She was married to John Floyd Megginson for 52 years until his death in 1998. Making their home in Thomasville, she was active in Thomasville Baptist Church and the Research Club, taught elementary school for many years and was a district advisor for the Penelope House Women's Shelter in Mobile, AL. Blessed with a splendid soprano voice, as a teenager she began giving solos in church, school, and club settings, which she continued to do into her late years..

After moving to Birmingham in 2000, she became an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, especially enjoying her ladies Sunday School class and trips and fellowship with Dawsonaires Senior Choir. In 2016, she relocated to Atherton Place Senior Living Facility. Throughout these transitions, she displayed graciousness, patience, and faith with quiet dignity. Her daughters have been truly blessed by her love and care.

She is survived by three daughters, Juno Sharp (Robert Michael) of Hoover, AL; Susan Gordon (David) of Acworth, GA; and Sandra Schaal (Bill) of Santa Barbara, CA; four grandchildren, Jennifer Sharp Stephens (E. Dudley) of St Simons Island, GA; Ed Gordon of Hendersonville, NC; Briana Gordon of Atlanta, GA; and Katy Gordon Davis (Justin) of Minneapolis, MN; and eleven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 1:00 pm until the 2:00 pm service time. Burial will follow at Choctaw Corner Cemetery in Thomasville, AL.
