Obituary for Clarence L. Newton, Jr.

Mr. Clarence Lezair Newton, Jr, of Thomasville, Alabama, passed away May 21, 2019, at his home. He was born June 23, 1926, Andrews, South Carolina, to the late Clarence Lezair Newton, Sr. and Sarah Caroline Thomas Newton. He was married 64 years to the love of his life, the late Ella Mae Altman Newton. He was a member of Pineview Baptist Church.

He was a graduate of Andrews High School and retired from MacMillan Paper Company in Camden, Alabama. He was a former member of the Alabama Mental Health Board and Thomasville Nursing Home Board. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He was known as a great gardener and took much pride in his tomatoes. He loved his church and was active in prayer meetings at Pineview Baptist Church and Thomasville United Methodist Church.

Mr. Newton is survived by two daughters: Jennifer N. Gatling (Mike) and Cynthia N. Parnell (Polie); three grandchildren: Michael C. Gatling (Nicki), Courtney P. Whittaker (Andy), and Justin E. Parnell (Susan) and seven great grandchildren; one sister, Sarah Nell N. Thompson and two brothers, Joseph A. Newton (Nancy) and S. Ronald Newton (Rhonda), and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife, Ella Mae Altman Newton; a son, Clarence L. Newton, III; one sister, Mary Lee N. Herndon; and three brothers, W. Danzig Newton, Warren E. Newton, and Thomas O. Newton preceded him in death.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Newton will be held May 25, 2019 at Pineview Baptist Church in Thomasville with visitation at 1 o’clock p.m. and celebration of life at 2 o’clock p.m. with the Rev. Mitch Thrower and Dr. James Best officiating. Pallbearers are Michael C. Gatling, Justin E. Parnell, Andrew B. Whittaker, Nick Altman, Larry Altman, Chris Goodwin, Jody Newton, and Tommy Newton. Honorary pallbearers are Marshall Parten, Roger Truett, John Wayne Overstreet, Fred Huff, Wendell Sheffield, Frank Meyers, and Johnny Duncan. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Thomasville, Alabama.
