Obituary for Warren Lyman Stokes

Warren Lyman Stokes age 87 of Linden, AL died May 3, 2019 at Marengo Nursing Home. He was a life-long resident of Marengo County. He was born December 10, 1931 in Thomaston, AL to William Everett and Bertha Sealy Stokes.

He was a long-time employee of Fort James Paper Corporation retiring in 1993 and was a veteran of the US Air Force. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandsons and was always available to help family, friends, and church members. He was a longtime member of Linden United Methodist church where he served as a trustee, a board member, and a member of the John Vicker’s Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Emmie Nell Bridges Stokes; two daughters, Dianne Stokes Wiggins and Beverly Barr (Gary); three grandchildren, David Wesley Wiggins, Emily Grey Wiggins Shaw (Steven), and Warren Matthew Barr; three brothers, James Winston Stokes (Katherine), Elvin Myles Stokes (Violet), and Billy Gaines Stokes (Charlotte); a sister, Phyllis Grey Stokes Jackson (James); and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Everett and Bertha Sealy Stokes; two brothers, Charles Everett Stokes and Willie Argyle Stokes; two sisters, Lalene Stokes McGilberry Jordan and Anniece Stokes Clark.

Visitation will be held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Monday, May 6, 2019 from 1:00 pm until the 2:00 pm services with Rev. Tony Antonelli officiating. Burial will follow at Goose Creek Cemetery in Lamison, AL.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Stokes’ name to Linden United Methodist Church, 401 North Main Street, Linden, AL 36748.

The family would like to thank the staff of Marengo Nursing Home for the loving care they provided to Mr. Stokes, to the staff of Southern Care Hospice, and to Dr. John Simmons.
