Obituary for Jane Carol Hamilton

Jane Hamilton, known to so many as, "Aunt Jane," passed away on January 10, 2015 in Altus, Oklahoma, while visiting her daughter, Joy. Jane was born March 8, 1926, the fourth of nine children born to B.A. and Rosa Cogle of Dixon's Mills, Alabama. Her parents and brothers, Booley, Robert and Russell preceded her in death, as well as a grandson, Jason.

Jane graduated from Dixon's Mills School then continued her education at Bob Jones University. She later transferred and graduated from Alabama College for Women with a degree in Social Work. Upon her graduation, she applied to and was accepted as a trainee to become an American Airlines stewardess. Jane had always dreamed of flying, having greatly admired Amelia Earhart. However, after the most careful of considerations, she chose to continue her education in Ft. Worth, TX at the Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute, now known as Arlington Baptist College, of Arlington, TX.

It was here she met her future husband, a WWII veteran and " preacher-boy," named, Nathan Kelso Hamilton of Knoxville, TN. After a year of courtship and their graduation from Bible School, they were married in Jane's family home, going on to pastor churches in Rocky Mount, VA, and several locations in California. It was in California, three years into their marriage, that Nathan drowned, leaving Jane with two very small children and expecting their third. After Nathan's death, Jane's parents brought her and her children back to Dixon's Mills, Alabama, where Jane spent the rest of her life.

Jane was very active in her family, church and community. She was passionate about her faith and shared it all of her life with every age group. Through the medium of Flannel Graph, a type of story board, Jane went anywhere she was invited to tell Bible stories of God's love for all of mankind. Jane, her sister, Nelda, and two, creative local men, also built, "OLD TOWN", an "old western town and Indian Reservation," which provided a life-size, walking narration about the difference Jesus can make in a person's life. Thousands of local children and adults from the area toured OLD TOWN during the twenty years it was in operation.

She leaves three, very grateful children and their spouses, who loved her so very much: Joy, and son-in-love, Julian; Lee, and daughter-in-love, Karen; and Nathan Kelso, Jr., and daughter-in-love, Liz. Grandchildren are Julie Ann, Joy Carol, Ashley, Anna, Christopher, Shelly, Kelso, Christine, and Allison, who will miss their "Ma Jane" so very much, as will her two great-grands, Ian and Isabelle. Jane's beloved sisters, Erin, Annie Lee, Nelda, Natalie, and Margaret will greatly miss her, too.

Because of Jane's great desire for the propagation of the Gospel, the family requests that in lieu flowers or gifts, donations in her memory can be made to the Central Baptist Church Missionary Fund, which she avidly supported all of her life.

Services to celebrate her life will be held in her church, Central Baptist Church of Dixon's Mills, on Saturday, January 17. The family will receive friends at 1:00 and her pastor, Bro. Aaron Carpenter will conduct the services at 2:00 pm.
