Obituary for Howard Scruggs Jordan (PAT)

Howard Scruggs Jordan (PAT)
Howard Scruggs Jordan, Sr. of Flatwood, AL., went to be with his Savior the morning of Sunday, July 13, 2014. Howard was born on May 11, 1934 in Grove Hill, AL to Henry Joseph Jordan and Elsie Mae Hollingsworth Jordan. He lived the majority of his 80 years on the family farm in Flatwood.

Howard was a man of many talents; frequently using those talents to help other people. Throughout his life, he was often found at someone’s home installing wiring for electricity, plumbing to provide water, or gas lines for heat and cooking. He taught himself the fine art of repairing televisions and was a shade-tree mechanic extraordinaire. In his life he built many fine homes for feathered creatures; many of which he enjoyed feeding and watching out his back window at home. He volunteered an infinite number of hours at his children’s school, Catherine Academy, doing electrical, plumbing, and general fix-it projects as well as helping with events. He was a member of the founding Board of Directors at Catherine Academy.

Howard assumed operation of the Flatwood Service Station and Grocery from his father in the 1960s. He also raised beef cattle, soybeans and pine trees on the farm in Flatwood. In his early years, Howard was collection agent for Life of Georgia Insurance; finishing his career as a letter carrier on the rural route out of the Thomaston, Alabama Post Office.

Howard raised three children with his first wife, Joan Rogers Jordan. He and Joan were part of the team of tireless souls who gave time, talent and treasure at Catherine Academy to assure their children an opportunity to receive a good start in life. When not working at CA, Howard and Joan were either working together on the farm, spending time with extended family, or enjoying various places around the Deep South. Howard, Joan and family attended Lamison Baptist Church.

A few years after Joan’s passing on March 25, 1989, Howard married Virginia Skinner from Thomaston. This marriage added many new faces to his family. And included many trips across America with friends, and family and co-workers at National Association of Postmasters of the United States meetings. A regular highlight each year was the cousins’ trip to Panama City, FL. During retirement, in between family gatherings and trips, Howard and Virginia maintained farming operations in both Flatwood and Thomaston. Howard and Virginia attended Thomaston United Methodist Church.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Joan, and second wife, Virginia. He is survived by his children, Howard Jordan, Jr. (Jeri), Anita Wright, William Jordan, James D. Skinner (Tabbitha), William N. Skinner, Holly S. Swindle (William), Steven B. Skinner, and Heidi S. Barnes (David). He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 11:00 am. Burial will be at the Hollingsworth Cemetery in Grove Hill, AL.

Arrangements by O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville, AL.
